From 1900 to the end of the sailing ship era, West Coast shipping company became the predominant owners of the last breed of sailing ships, the square-riggers. Most of these ships were built elsewhere, but became a representative part of Pacific commerce, basing their operations at West Coast ports from California to British Columbia.
